With Kalona at the House of Night, Shekhina dead and Neferet as Kalona's consort, Zoey, Eric, Aphrodite, and the others have taken shelter where they might actually be safe: in the corridors under Seattle with Stevie Ray and the rest of the red-marked vampires.
But not all of the people with her trust the red-marked vampires. And Stevie Ray is injured and needs help. Zoey helps with her friends injuries, but it seems that Eric, even if he supported Zoey when it came to Kalona, is still angry at her for sleeping with Noble. Zoey is angry that he is still blaming her for what happened, and tells him off. She's also angry that other girls are showing interest in him.
But even with Aphrodite warning her that Stevie Ray is hiding something, as are the Red Fledgelings, they seem honest and above-board to Zoey- or maybe she just doesn't want to admit that anything is different about her old friend Stevie Ray, that maybe she isn't giving Zoey the whole story about herself and the Red Fledgelings.
But even though some of them are rather territorial, Zoey appoints one of the Red Fledglings, Kramisha, as her new Vampire Poet Laureate when she sees that Kramisha is writing poems that are strangely prophetic about the current situation.
But when Zoey's boyfriend Heath comes by to see her, she walks out to his car, and when he again offers her blood despite the imprint between them being broken, she runs out and is attacked and badly hurt by one of the Raven Mockers.
Now, Zoey could die, and the only place left to go for her is back to the House of Night. Back to Neferet, Back to Kalona- who is still showing up in Zoey's dreams, and back to a school full of people who are starting to doubt and not believe in Nyx.
Worse, Kalona may have Neferet, but he also wants Zoey, who, disturbingly, he's started to call A-ya, or "Mine", the same as the doll-girl made to trap him long ago by the Cherokee wisewomen. He doesn't seem to care so much about Neferet as he does about Zoey. And while Zoey might be tempted by him, her fear of him and what he's doing to the House of Night students is stronger still.
Zoey knows that she must get rid of Kalona to have any hope of defeating Neferet and returning the students to their faith in Nyx. And the only way to do that is to decipher one of Kamisha's poems and uncover the clues to sending Kalona away- hopefully for good. But can Zoey and her friends decipher the riddle in time?
I love this series. Zoey and all her frienda are awesome: Always human, able to be frightened, feel pain and even despair, but in the end, she always comes through and doesn't lose herself in weeping, regrets or "might have been". I love Zoey completely, and that's why I'll continue reading this series. Zoey continues to change and grow with each one.
And here, she has to deal with the Big Bad, Kalona, who is posing as Nyx's consort Erebus. But even if Zoey finds a way to deal with him, will he really be gone, or just out of their hair for a while? Also important is Stark, the Red Fledgeling brought back from the grave by Neferet. But while sometimes he seems normal like Stevie Ray and the rest of the Red Fledgelings, sometimes he is scarily... not
Will Zoey's compassion and talking to him be able to bring him down from the edge and his own anti-social behavior? It looks as though Zoey may be succeeding, but he may not be back to himself until after Neferet is dealt with. And even then, will he be able to escape the pain of the things he's done?
"Hunted" continued the streak of total awesomeness that is this series. Anyone who's read "Twilight" should read The House of Night series, because it totally kicks Twilight's ass in book terms. If you can only read one vampire novel- read this one. You'll be glad you did. Highly recommended.
